VCCA Clerks’ Convention 2017
The annual convention of the Virginia Court Clerks’ Association (VCCA) was held from September 8 – 10 in Tysons Corner, Va. Tysons Corner is situated in Fairfax County which is the home county of John T. Frey, Clerk of the Circuit Court in Fairfax County. John Frey served as President of the VCCA from September 2016 through September 9, 2017 and it is traditional for the president to host the convention in his/her jurisdiction, with some exceptions.
The convention kicked off with a golf tournament at 1757 Golf Course in Ashburn, Virginia near Dulles Airport. Rick Francis served as the golf commissioner and did a fine job with organizing this social event.
The convention business meetings commenced with reports from the IT Advisory Committee report by committee chair Vic Mason and a nominating committee report by Chaz Haywood. At the conclusion of the nominating committee report, a new slate of officers for 2016-2017 was approved. After the business meetings, clerks, deputy clerks, spouses and vendors attended the Washington Nationals game in Washington DC. Prior to the game, everyone enjoyed a wonderful picnic dinner at Nationals ballpark. We witnessed history during the game as the Nationals hit an in-the-park grand slam which is very rare. Pictured here are Gary and Maria Clemens discussing the grand slam with vendors Bob Gannon and Craig Sanders with Logan Systems while Vic and Christine Mason stand in awe after observing the historic grand slam.
On Saturday, legislative reports were presented by Chip Dicks, legislative counsel to the VCCA, the Library of Virginia provided a report on the grants program and a team of presenters from the Fairfax County Circuit Court along with Chaz Haywood provided information related to self-represented litigants. The Poker Hand program was facilitated to encourage interaction with the numerous vendors at the convention. John Frey hosted the President’s Reception preceding dinner at the Tysons Corner Hyatt Regency. During the convention banquet, numerous guests were recognized and the VCCA legislator of the year was announced. During the banquet, the newly elected VCCA officers were sworn into office, including new VCCA President Paul Ferguson (Arlington) as Supreme Court Justice Bill Mims administered the oath of office to Paul. Justice Mims delivered the keynote address at the convention banquet and he praised the leadership and service of clerks of circuit court. Pictured here is Justice Mims administering the oath of office to Paul Ferguson as Paul assumes the position of president. “We are honored to have Justice Mims join us at our annual banquet especially since he used to represent Northern Virginia while serving in the House of Delegates and in the Virginia Senate,” stated John Frey during the introduction of Justice Mims. Justice Mims worked as an attorney in Northern Va. while serving as a Virginia legislator for many years and then served as Assistant Attorney General and Attorney General prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court of Virginia.
During the closing meetings on Sunday, Ashby Pritchett presented the career development certificates to those clerks and deputy clerks who completed the program in 2017 and Robyn DeSocio of the State Compensation Board provided information on the workload standards. New President Paul Ferguson announced the convention will be held in Virginia Beach in September 2018.
The 2017 VCCA Convention was a big success and several individuals were recognized for their efforts. Joanie Walling, Krisha Jones, Gerarda Culipher, Tommy Moore and Nettie White were very instrumental in organizing the convention. Special thanks goes to our convention sponsors which include Tyler Technologies, BMS Direct, Kofile Technologies, Logan Systems, Now Applications, Simplifile, Valley Office Machines and the Virginia Metropolitan Clerks’ Association. Without these sponsors, the convention offerings would not have been possible to provide. Thank you to President Frey, the Convention Committee and our generous sponsors for making VCCA Convention 2017 a big success in Northern VA.
